Team BC have curled themselves into the gold-medal match against Russia at the 2nd Annual International Wheelchair Summer Spiel hosted by the Cape Cod Curling Club in Falmouth, Mass.

Alison Duddy of Quesnel, who throws lead rocks, is joined by skip Gary Cormack, third Frank Labounty of Prince George and second Vincent Miele.

Facing teams from Quebec, Scotland, Russia the United States and a U.S./Canada team, Team BC finished round-robin play with a 5-1 record.

Team BC's only loss came at the hands of Team Russia in the sixth round of play Tuesday afternoon.

"It was a nail biter," Duddy said to describe the 10-8 loss to Russia.

The loss is the only blemish on what has proven to be a week of highlights for Team BC, especially a win against Equipe Quebec.

"Having an opportunity to redeem ourselves against Quebec, who beat us at nationals this year, was a highlight," Duddy said.

Also at the top of the list of highlights is a win against Scotland, the current world silver medalists in wheelchair curling.

Despite the loss against Russia, Duddy said it was a special game and Team BC were honoured to play against Team Russia, as the Winter Olympics and Paralympics will be held in Sochi, Russia.

Those highlights carry much weight with Duddy and her Team BC teammates and now the outcome of the bonspiel is not as important as the accomplishments.

"No matter the outcome, we can come home with our heads held high knowing we placed at least second against some very good curling teams," Duddy said.

In other matches, Scotland and Quebec will play for third and fourth place and Team USA will face Team USA/Canada for fifth and sixth place.

In addition to the camaraderie of competition, both Duddy and Miele were quick to recognize the efforts of the host club and their The hospitality of this small, totally volunteer run club and their volunteers.

"They have been amazing," Miele said.

"All the members have helped out, taking care of everything from  ice maintenance to driving and cooking meals.

"Mary and Tony Colacchio, the spiel organizers, deserve special mention as they have put in countless hours to make the 2nd Annual Wheel Spiel the success that it has been."

The championship game is schedules for Wednesday, July 20.
