They came from across School District 28 last Thursday, ready to run, jump and throw the best they could.

Elementary students gathered at Correlieu secondary school for the annual district track meet and at the end of the day, student athletes from Lakeview elementary school finished at the top of the class.

Lakeview lead the pack with 151 total points, thanks to finishing in the top three in three of the four age divisions, including a whopping 61 points for a first-place finish in the senior boys aggregate.

Lakeview also had a third-place finish in the junior-boys aggregate and a second-place finish in the senior-girls aggregate.

Red Bluff elementary took second place overall with 141 points, just ahead of Dragon Lake elementary school in third place with 110 points.

Red Bluff finished in first place in the junior, 8 – 10-year-old boys and third place in the junior girls aggregate.

Red Bluff also took second place in the senior, 11 – 13-year-old boys aggregate and first place in the senior girls aggregate.

Dragon Lake earned their third-place finish overall by finishing in top spot in the junior-girls aggregate with 57 points and a third place finish in the senior boys aggregate.

Alyssa Fulton, 8, a Grade 3 student, helped her École Baker squad to a second place finish in the junior girls aggregate with a first-place finish in the shot put event.

“Not really,” Fulton said with a shy smile of her expectations of winning the event.

But Fulton did enter the competition fully prepared.

“I’ve been practicing with my teachers,” she said.

Although they didn’t finish in the top three for the aggregate scores, St. Ann’s Academy athletes did manage some strong performances.

One of those performances was put in by Cole Dinsdale, 13, in the high jump event.

Dinsdale, a Grade 7 student, took top spot by jumping over the bar at 135 cm, beating his previous personal best by two centimetres.

The personal best came as the result of a training regimen that Dinsdale described as, “Sometimes.”

Given the special training regimen, it is no wonder Dinsdale admitted to being surprised he won the event.
