The 47th annual mixed Valentine Bonspiel uncurled last weekend as curlers from around the province slid into town to join local teams for a fun weekend of curling.

The event brought in 20 teams to compete for the hearts and minds of local curlers.

Dave Plant, the Quesnel Curling Club manager was happy with the event.

"Mixed events are a tough draw, most of the time we're just mixing and matching existing teams for the tournament," he said.

"It's a really fun, non-competitive event."

John Havens, from Quesnel and Grant Wawryck, also from Quesnel face-off in the bonspiel's 'A' event.

The Haven's Rink got off to a slow start as John was drawing against four in the first and came up short, making the game 4-0 after one. Haven's battled back to make it 5-3 after three, but Wawryck took two in the fourth to make it 7-3 at the half way mark. By full time Wawryck had pulled in another three, to finish the game up 10-4.

Local Blair Hedden and Tim Richards found themselves on the same sheet at the end of the 'B' event.

Tied at two after five ends, Hedden got two in the sixth and stole three in the seventh to break open a well-played game. Hedden took the game 7-2.

Colin Shpak, from Quesnel, threw rocks against local Mike Myron in the 'C' event final.

In a very tight game, Shpak was leading 4-3 after five and stole one in the sixth and another in the seventh on a measurement to win 6-4.

This weekend the curling club will host a men’s bonspiel, along with the final hurraw of the youth curling league.
