Skip Larry Gardner didn’t steal any hearts, but he did steal his way to first place at the 45th Annual Valentine’s Day Bonspiel last weekend.

A total of 22 teams, made up of sweethearts and friends, hit the ice at the Quesnel Curling Club.

In the A-event final, sponsored by Design Flooring, Gardner faced the Grant Wawryk rink.

Gardner, along with third Lori Wawryk, second Dave Wawryk and lead Linda Hanson, started stealing right away, scoring single points in the first, second and third ends.

In the fourth end, Wawryk was forced to score a single and turn the hammer over to Gardner.

Gardner used the hammer to his advantage and scored a deuce in the fifth end.

Down 5-1, Wawryk took one too many chances and Gardner capitalized by stealing three more in the sixth end for an 8-1 win.

In the B-event final, sponsored by Cariboo Fire Protection, Joe Leonard and Rick Fewster of Prince George had good moments and not-so-good moments.

Legeard, with Lynn Mamic throwing third rocks, Rick Cindric at second and Wendy Needham playing lead, started off well and were ahead 6-1 after five ends.

But the tide changed quickly as Fewster scored two in the sixth end and then stole three more in the sixth end to knot the score at 6-6.

In the eighth and final end, Fewster wrecked on a guard, leaving Legeard with a single point for the 7-6 win.

The C event, sponsored by Quesnel River Pulp, pitted Colin Shpak agains Jim Swanson.

After two ends, Swanson was up 2-0.

Shpak, along with Terri Shpak at third, Mike Sarabyn at second and lead Angie Curle scored an amazing six points in the third end and held on for the win.
