The Quesnel 4x4 Club is hoping to kick off the racing season in a whole new — Canadian — way. In the snow.

Snowvid-19, The Race is set to take place Saturday, Feb. 5 and Sunday, Feb. 6.

“Snow is one of those things that we can chew in and beat on our rigs all day long, and sometimes you make 100 feet,” said Rob Wilkin.

“It’s not forgiving, but it’s just a lot of winter fun.”

In the past, the club has participated in the Insanity Fab Winter Challenge held in Idaho.

Wilkin said they usually would be down there but will all the restrictions they had decided to put on their own local event.

There will be a two-wheel-drive (2WD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) beater class.

On-site camping is also anticipated to be available, and Wilkin said one club member indicated that they hope to build an igloo they can stay in over the weekend.

“We’re hoping to start the race with fresh untracked snow and have the trucks through our obstacle course trail,” he added.

Marking the new year, the club had headed out for their annual Hangover Run, with some reaching the top of Mount Milburn.

Wilkin drives a 1997 Jeep Cherokee with 40-inch tires and said he had made it about two-thirds of the way.

“It’s always a sense of pride in getting yourself to somewhere that you probably shouldn’t get to and conditions that you should stay home,” Wilkin said of off-roading in snow.

“The snow is such a different challenge—it’s like being in the mud the whole time but being clean at the same time.”

Earlier in December, club members teamed up to surprise member Dan Campbell who has multiple sclerosis, or MS.

More information on the upcoming Snowvid-19, The Race can be found on the Quesnel 4x4 Club Public Page on Facebook. Wilkin said it will be postponed if overnight temperatures drop below -20 C.
