PHOTOS: Roos lose home opener, but start season with big Quesnel crowd

The Quesnel Kangaroos started the CIHL season vs. WL Stampeders

The Quesnel Kangaroos held their 2023-24 home opener on Saturday night (Oct. 7) at West Fraser Centre. The team’s first home game of the year is always in honour of their alumni, with many former Roos welcomed onto the ice for a pre-game ceremony.

This year had the added bonus of unveiling the Hocky BC championship banner as the winners of the 2023 Coy Cup (top Senior-AA amateur team in the province), which the team accomplished on home ice.

A large and loud crowd had plenty to cheer about as the Roos and the Williams Lake Stampeders were tied at one after the first period, tied at two midway through the second, but the Stamps kept pressing and ended up chiselling out a 7-3 victory.

The Roos are on the road for their next few games (Oct. 14 in Vanderhoof, Oct. 21 in Smithers, Oct. 22 in Hazelton) but then back on home ice again to host the Terrace River Kings on Nov. 4, the Prince Rupert Rampage on Nov. 5, and a Remembrance Day grudge match versus the Stamps on Nov. 11.

Stick with the Observer for much more Quesnel Kangaroos and Central Interior Hockey League coverage coming up in the next couple of editions. In the meantime, enjoy a montage of the opening night game action.
