Local pugilistic prodigy Britynn “Hurricane” Carter took her talents down to Portland, Oregon at the beginning of the month (Nov. 3) and notched a victory at the Red Shield Fall Classic Tournament.

Carter says she was nervous heading into her match with Alexie Wolf, a fighter out of Eugene, Oregon, as the fight schedule was repeatedly moved around, which can be torturous when trying to mentally prepare to get in the ring.

She was able to settle down pretty quickly once it came time to throw leather, however.

“Once I got in there, she was shorter and [not as experienced],” says Carter. “So it was sort of easier than I expected.”

The 2 Rivers Boxing Club representative won the match by unanimous decision, never giving her outmatched opponent a chance to get into the fight.

Although she was training through an injury after jamming her hand playing basketball, Carter says she wasn’t restricted in her tools.

“I used everything,” she says. “But there’s so much adrenaline [in the ring] that I can’t remember anything that I threw.”

As the match was quite a distance away, Carter had Ellen Connor, the club coach at Sooke Boxing, in her corner, which worked out terrifically, as the two have developed quite a rapport, with Carter often attending camps at the island gym.

“I listen to her really well,” she says. “I think we really click.”

Carter is currently waiting to see if she can get a match for the upcoming Rumble 25, which will be held at 2 Rivers Boxing club on Nov. 24.

With her pedigree, however, it’s quite difficult for her to get suitable match-ups, so she might have to wait until the new year to put her skills to use.
