As the end of the Quesnel Curling Club’s sponsor league season comes into sight, it’s a sign of the quality of the league that both teams playing in the final have been forced to make lineup changes for the final matchup.

Teams sponsored by the Child Development Centre and Quesnel Scaffolding Service have players participating in provincial events later this month.

“We have a men and women’s competing in the seniors, and now we have a mixed,” club manager Dave Plant said.

“We have three teams competing in a provincial championship, so we’re pretty happy with that.”

Normally provincial participation wouldn’t affect the sponsor league, but COVID-19 health measures pushed back provincials this year.

“We’re just happy to be able to have bonspiels and have provincials,” Plant said.

“The season is rolling along really good… We’ll take it compared to what we had last year. We’re going to get all our major events in.”

The Child Development Centre won the “B-Side” of the playoff bracket, with Quesnel Scaffolding winning the “A-Side.” To win the overall championship, the CDC team will need to beat Scaffolding twice in a row.

Other companies sponsoring teams in the league include Redz Shedz, Fix Auto, Service Electric and the Billy Barker Hotel.

The double-elimination format of the playoffs for the 2021/2022 season was put in place due to a lower number of teams. Normally the league has eight teams, but only six participated this year.

“We came up with something a little different, and it was well received by our players,” Plant said, adding he hopes the league will continue to grow.

“We have some really good chuckers in our club.”

The final games of the season for the sponsor league will take place on March 16.
