Fists were flying in Quesnel for the first time in two years as the 2 Rivers Boxing Club hosted Rumble 28 on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Head Coach Wally Doern said that plans for a Quesnel only event were expanded when Boxing BC asked to host a BC Bronze Gloves event, opening up slots for boxers from across B.C. and out-of-province.

“It was pretty tough on the grey matter,” Doern quipped.

“A lot of people to work with, weights and ages and distances. It was a lot of stuff to figure out but it all worked out, the show was a success.”

Attendance was limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, but a show at noon, and a show at 7 p.m. meant a full day of action inside the squared circle.

“The crowd was awesome,” Doern said.

“We had to turn lots away.”

In the afternoon show Brooklyn Olson defeated Charlotte Shante from North Vancouver via decision and Lucas Oxenbury lost to Gabriel Brint from Nelson.

The evening was chalk full of 2 Rivers boxers.

Trace McGregor lost to Nelson’s Portor Hanson, Britynn ‘Hurricane’ Carter won a decision against Korona Hamilton from Edmonton and Michael Brooks fell in the third round against Cathel Kell from North Vancouver.

Both the Bronze Boy and Bronze Girl, awarded to the best individual performances for each gender at the show, went to 2 Rivers boxers.

Melissa ‘The Red Hornet’ O’Flynn received the honour for her split decision victory against Sabrina Simmons of North Vancouver and Noah Kennedy took home the trophy in a split decision win against Cam Moniz from Kelowna.

Moniz and Kennedy also shared the award for having the best bout of the night.
