Saturday afternoon

Summer is officially here as the boys of summer have cleaned off their cleats and taken to the diamonds for another season of hardball.

Although the season has just begun, it could be promising for the Quesnel Jacks if their play on the weekend is any measure of what is to come.

The Jacks senior men’s baseball team got off to a good start in the 2011 season of the Prince George Senior Baseball League.

Facing the Queensway Auto World Red Sox of Prince George, the Jacks scored 12 runs to win both games of their double header, 6-0 and 6-1.

The key to both games, Jacks manager and pitcher, Randy Enns said, was pitching and sound defensive play.

In the first game, Mike Tomlinson took the mound for the Jacks and allowed only three hits in seven innings.

The Jacks manhandled the Red Sox pitching with 10 hits, good enough for six runs.

Also impressive, the Jacks did not commit any fielding errors in either the first or second game.

In addition to playing error-free ball in the second game, the Quesnel team put on a defensive show, collecting two double plays on throws from the outfield.

On the mound, Enns pitched four solid innings to record the win and Cody Cole came on in relief for three innings to record the save.

In the batters box, Rob Musselman collected four of the 11 hits for the Jacks to lead the way in the 6-1 win.

The Jacks are in action this weekend at West Fraser Timber Park with a double header against the Westwood Sports Pub Predators.  Game time is 1 p.m.
