The Quesnel Kangaroos got shut out in their attempts to reschedule a missed home game versus Smithers.
The visiting Steelheads were on their way to West Fraser Centre, the Kangaroos players already in their gear and fans in the seats, when it was announced that their bus had broken down and they couldn’t get to the rink on time.
There had been hopes that the game could be made up.
“We won’t be rescheduling the canceled game so we will just get the two points and Smithers will be forced to pay a league fine,” explained team captain Alessio Tomassetti. “We tried so hard but the scheduling just doesn’t work.”
The fine is $2,500 to the Central Interior Hockey League.
It represents lost ticket revenue and a lost opportunity to sell Coy Cup ticket packages. The Kangaroos are hosting the provincial Senior-AA Amateur Hockey Championship in March. There will still be playoff home game opportunities for Roos fans.
Their weekend could not have gone much better, in their pursuit of playoff positioning. On Saturday night the Roos were on the road up against the Hazelton Wolverines, followed on Sunday by a game against the Steelheads in Smithers.
The Hazelton game turned into a 9-3 blowout victory for Quesnel.
The game’s first goal was scored by Nick Tomassetti assisted by Jordan Draper.
Their second tally was by Eli Jarvis from Jordan Draper and Nick Tomassetti.
Their third goal came from Alessio Tomassetti, assisted by Justin Fulton.
Alessio Tomassetti then scored the team’s fourth goal from Lane Vandewetering.
The fifth goal was scored by Jordan Draper from Nick Tomassetti.
Goal six came from Jordan Draper, assisted by Eli Jarvis and goalie Alex Wright.
The seventh marker came from Ryan Keis from Brody Dyck and Leif Scott.
Goal eight came off the stick of Eli Jarvis from Jordan Draper and Alessio Tomassetti.
The ninth and final goal of the night was scored by Justin Fulton, assisted by Alessio Tomassetti.
The margin of victory was even wider, in the second game, but Quesnel still pumped in the same number of goals en route to a 9-2 win over Smithers.
First period Roos goals were scored by Alessio Tomassetti from Justin Fulton and Lane Vandewetering, then Alessio Tomassetti from Bryan Allbee and Jordan Low, followed by Brody Dyck from Jordan Low and Alek Gibbs, and finally Nick Tomassetti from Eli Jarvis and Bryan Allbee.
Second period Kangaroos scoring came from Alessio Tomassetti from Justin Fulton and Bryan Allbee, to complete the hat trick, then Jordan Draper from Eli Jarvis and Jordan Low, and Jordan Draper converted on a penalty shot.
In the third period, why not make it four on the night? Alessio Tomassetti put in yet another, from Lane Vandewetering and Justin Fulton. The Roos closed out their night with a goal by Eli Jarvis from Jordan Draper and Nick Tomassetti.
The final game of the Quesnel Kangaroos regular season is a road game coming up Feb. 3 in Vanderhoof against the Nechako Northstars. Quesnel currently sits in first place in the Central Interior Hockey League standings.
