The Quesnel Kangaroos continue to battle near the top of the Central Interior Hockey League standings, as the regular season winds down.

The Roos split a weekend series of games, dropping a Saturday night contest to the Kitimat Ice Demons, but defeating the Prince Rupert Rampage, their closest rival on Sunday.

The win was enough to push the Kangaroos ahead of the Rampage, into second place in the league standings.

Quesnel entered the weekend second in the league standings, one point ahead of Prince Rupert.

The weekend appeared to be getting off to a good start. The Kangaroos held leads of 1-0 and 3-2 after the first and second periods respectively in Kitimat.

But the Ice Demons would storm back in the third, eventually winning the game 7-4.

“A few penalties and mistakes cost us in the 3rd period,” Kangaroos captain Alessio Tomassetti said after the games. “Definitely a game the boys will learn from.”

The Kangaroos didn’t let their lead slip away the next day in Prince Rupert. Two of the top teams in the CIHL appeared evenly matched through the first two periods, with Eli Jarvis and Justin Fulton scoring for the Kangaroos.

Early in the second period, the Rampage tied the game, but Ian Jarvis’ 3-2 tally would be the difference for the visitors, as the Roos went on to win 5-2.

Two regular-season home games remain for the Kangaroos. They’ll host a make-up game against Terrace on Friday, Feb. 11, and then host the Nechako North Stars on Saturday, Feb. 12, both at the West Fraser Centre.
