Pickleball is already pounding out an active spring.
The Quesnel Pickleball Club is busy on their home courts, but local athletes are also travelling to tournaments out of town.
The crown jewel coming up soon is the Billy Barker Days Pickleball Tournament, which may still be weeks away, but registration is open and space is limited for the popular annual tournament. The event happens July 15-16, with game-play happening from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. those days.
The tournament will be a round robin-style playdown with medal rounds to follow.
New this year are expanded age categories (Any Age and 60-Plus) and Coed Doubles 2.5 category where you may sign up as a team of women, men, or mixed.
Categories:
Men’s Doubles 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+ (Saturday)
Women’s Doubles: 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+ (Saturday)
Mixed Doubles: 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+ (Sunday)
Coed Doubles: 2.5+ (Sunday)
There is a max of six teams for each skill level, with the exception of Mixed Doubles 3.5. This level will have 12 teams (two pools of six).
Cost: $30 for one event, plus $10 for additional event.
A note on age rules: An older player may play in a younger age group. A younger player may not play in an older age group.
Skill Level: The skill level of players is determined by their data in their Pickleball Brackets profile. Players may play at a higher skill level but cannot play at a lower level.
Registration is through the Pickleball Brackets system where you must have established a profile and must be a Pickleball Canada member.
A pair’s status in the tournament is not verified until the second partner registers. Failure of the second partner to register within two days of the first player registering may jeopardize the status of the pair. Find the registration links on the Quesnel Pickleball Club website or Facebook page. You will also find links to the summer schedule and ways to join if you are not already involved in pickleball in Quesnel.
Anyone interested in being on the tournament committee is asked to please contact Liz Sales at jesales@telus.net or 250-992-0020.
