The Quesnel River Archers are overjoyed at the results of their talented shooters on the national stage.

Lora-Lee Murray clinched a gold medal at the Canadian National 3D Archery Championships in Prince Albert, Sask., on Saturday (Aug. 3).

Shooting as a part of Team B.C., Murray joined 220 archers who were shooting at the most important 3D event on the Canadian calendar.

3D archery is when the contestants shoot at a series of styrofoam targets meant to represent animals that might be hunted with a bow.

Murray prevailed in the Female Barebow category, where she has had much success province-wide.

She did not expect to fare so well at the national level, however.

“I never dreamed that I would win gold,” she says. “I was just ecstatic to be going and was just going for the experience.

“At best, I was thinking I was going to come third, but I got ahead of the others on the first day and managed to maintain my lead.”

The shoot started on Saturday for her, and there were four rounds for a total of 80 targets.

She adds she was pretty emotional when she realized at the end of her last round that she was going to win the contest, so she immediately started texting her family to tell them the good news.

Murray will also shoot at the National Field Archery Championships, which will also be held in Prince Albert, Sask., on Aug. 7.

Murray was not the only Quesnel River Archer who will be bringing home hardware from the big show. Kayla Erickson also won bronze in the Female Barebow PreCub category.

Erickson will add this accomplishment to the gold she won at the provincials in April.
