A year after a global pandemic completely shut down their season, Quesnel minor baseball is planning their return to play.

“We’re pretty optimistic,” said Chelsee Scanlan “It’s such a different feeling than last year. We had everything ordered, everything coming in, and all of a sudden we couldn’t play.”

The deadline for registration is April 12, and the season will begin the first week of May.

Scanlan guessed around 180 players hit the field playing minor baseball in Quesnel in 2019, and registration is tracking normally despite the pandemic.

“We want to know what numbers we have, so we can order things like jerseys,” she said. “We encourage people to register earlier rather than later if they’re thinking about it.”

Baseball BC’s current return to play plans do not include any games or tournaments, and only players under the age of 22 are allowed on the field. In addition, no spectators are allowed, masks are required and daily screening must be in place.

“We’re just hoping the guidelines from the public health order will open up a little more, and not shut us down,” Scanlan said. “It’s out of our hands, it is what it is.”

Quesnel minor baseball is even planning year-end tournaments, hoping the year will move forward relatively normally.

All adults in B.C. are expected to receive a COVID-19 vaccination dose by the end of June. Quesnel minor baseball is also looking for volunteers to coach in 2021.
