Classic and skate-skiers will hit the trails at Hallis Lake on Sunday, March 8, hoping to glide their way to victory at the Cariboo Ski Touring Club’s (CSTC) annual Cariboo Fun Freestyle Race.
This year will mark the second anniversary of the annual freestyle event, which was created to help accommodate and encourage a growing number of skate-skiers in the area, along with the existing classic skiers.
Skiers will have the option to enter either an eight-kilometre, 16-kilometre or 24-kilometre race to test their skills alongside their fellow winter weather loving athletes.
Ron Watteyne, publicity director and ski coach for the CSTC, says the “low-key” race is a great way to help new cross country skiers, as well as expose experienced skiers to more of the trails at Hallis Lake that they may not otherwise have skied.
“There are some people who come out and ski a particular loop all the time — they might sky the south loop with their dog or they might ski Gerry’s Choice and that might be all they ever ski,” he said. “So this race goes on different trails and it exposes people to some of the different trails we have, and there are 35 kilometres of trails out there, and it’s nice to ski all of them.”
Anyone interested in taking part in the race can register the day of the event, between 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. at Hallis Lake Lodge, or ahead of time online at caribooski.ca. Online registrations will entered into a draw to win a CSTC hoodie, and children under the age of 10 can register for free.
