Members of the Quesnel Figure Skating Club travelled to Kelowna last week (Mar. 2-4) for the 2018 Super Series STARSkate Final, a competition from Skate Canada’s STARSkate program.

The program assesses figure skaters from level 1 (beginner) to 10 (advanced), with Star 1-3 assessed but not ranked, Star 4 skaters assessed and ranked, and Star 5-10 skaters ranked provincially, based on an accumulation of points throughout the season.

Twelve Quesnel skaters travelled to the event, with their abilities ranging from Star 2 to Star 8.

Star 2 girls Hannah Lewis, Kaitlin Barry and Maylie Backer each gave stellar performances. Lewis received a silver assessment, Barry a bronze assessment and Backer a silver assessment.

Quesnel’s Star 4 girls included Katelynn Grant and Ashley Burke, who both competed in the under-10 division. Grant came second and Burke fifth. Grant also received a silver assessment in the Introductory Interpretive category.

Presley LeHeureux competed in the Star 4 girls under 13 category, earning ninth place.

Jersey LeHeureux and Katherine Osmond are Quesnel’s Star 4 girls in the 13 and over category. Osmond placed 8th overall, and LeHeureux 10th. Osmond also earned fifth place in the Bronze Interpretive category.

Alexa McTavish is Quesnel’s Star 5 under-13 skater, and she placed 26th in her category. Star 5 girl Casey Fisher competed in the 13 and over category, placing 23rd.

Star 5 boy Mitchell Dunn placed second in his under-13 category, and the points he has accrued over the season put him in the top spot, as provincial champion. Dunn was awarded a trophy and will be inducted into the Quesnel Sports Hall of Fame. (See our accompanying story).

And Quesnel’s Star 8 skater Beverly Smetaniuk placed 23rd in the women’s category, also earning 10th place in the Silver Interpretive category.

Quesnel Figure Skating Club coach Carly Dinicol says she was very proud of all the skaters who participated in the event.

“Our skaters were up against some stiff competition this past weekend.

“Most clubs skate all year, but Quesnel only has ice for eight months of the year. The fact that our skaters can remain competitive provincially is absolutely amazing!

“I am so proud of all of our skaters this year, our club has seen more growth than most clubs in our region so it’s an exciting time for the Quesnel Figure Skating Club.”

The young athletes will have a few more chances to show off their talents this season, doing so locally at the Quesnel Figure Skating Club’s 2018 Gala, which takes place Mar. 14 at West Fraser Centre.
