Track and field athletes from Quesnel junior school and Correlieu senior secondary made more than their fair share of trips to the podium, May 19 - 21 at the zone championships held in Prince George.
QJS sent six athletes to the competition and together they collected 16 medals.
"Their results were very good," coach Pat Marsh said.
Cheyann Newman led the Bantam girls with five individual medals. A Grade 8 student, Newman earned gold in the 100 m race, the 80m and 300m hurdles and the long jump, as well as a bronze in the triple jump.
In addition, Newmann, together with Shaye Tarry, Kayla Flannagan and Kaillyn Godsoe took first place in the 4 x 100m relay race.
Tarry also took top honours in the 1500m and 3000m races.
Flannagan added a bronze medal in the long jump and took fourth place in the triple jump.
Godsoe rounded out the medal haul for the Grade 8 girls with a gold in the triple jump and bronze medal in the 100m race.
"The four bantam girls collected more points than any other bantam girls team," Marsh said to emphasize the performance of the Grade 8 girls.
Darby Sutton, a Grade 9 student, earned a gold medal in the discus throw and added silver medals in the hammer throw and the javelin, as well as a bronze medal in the shot put.
Brayden McCall, the only boy from QJS, continued his domination in hurdles with a gold medal in the 100m hurdles and added a silver medal in the javelin.
CSS students also displayed top-notch skills at the zone championships, with the Grade 10 boys and girls winning the junior aggregate and the Grade 11 and 12 boys and girls winning the senior aggregate.
Sadie Achen led the Grade 10 girls with four medals, including silver medals in 400m hurdles and the triple jump, as well as bronze medals in the 100m and 400m races.
Katrina MacLean pocketed silver medals in the 1500m, 3000m and the 1500m steeplechase.
Jessica McDonald also collected three medals, gold in the 80m hurdles and triple jump and a bronze in the long jump.
Jordan Pawluk earned bonze medals in the 400m hurdles and triple jump events. Serenity Lawlor earned silver medals in the 200m and 80m hurdle events, while teammate Emma Alexander earned a silver medal in the hammer throw and a bronze medal in the 200m race.
Chelsea Hydamacka finished first in the hammer throw and added a bronze medal in the discus.
Among junior boys, James Olausen earned gold medals in the 200m and 400m races and added a silver medal in the 100m race.
Jeff Stavas earned bronze in the 100m and 200m races and Lucas Boulley earned silver medals in the 110m and 400m hurdles.
Olausen, Stavast and Boulley teamed up with Chris Johanneson to win the 4x100m and 4x400m relay races.
In senior girls competition, Michelle Achen earned three medals. Achen took gold in the long jump, silver in the 100m race and bronze in the 200m race.
Amy Wood earned gold in the 1500m and bronze in the 3000m.
Cheryl Nordal came away with three bronze medals for her efforts in the 100m hurdles, the long jump and triple jump.
Natalie Sales earned a bronze medal in the 100m race and Vanessa van Aert earned a silver medal in the 100m hurdles.
Laura Boeni finished first in the hammer throw and third in the javelin, while teammate Jennifer Meyer earned a silver medal in the 1500m race walk.
Achen, Sales, van Aert and Nordal teamed up to take third place in the 4x100m and 4x400m relay races.
In senior boys competition, Lee Roodenburg led the way with silver medals in the shot put and discus to go with bronze medals in hammer throw and javelin.
Ian Pepper finished first in the 100m race and triple jump and also earned a silver medal in the long jump.
Chris Stavast took first place in the 110m hurdles and Bron Finkelstein took third place in the triple jump.
Brian Wattie came home with a silver medal for his efforts in javelin.
Pepper, Stavast, Finkelstein and Wattie also teamed up to win the 4x100m relay race.
Wattie, Stavast, Jagr McCall and Brandon Rye put their speed together to take third place in the 4x400m relay race.
