The basketball varisty teams at Quesnel junior secondary school and local elementary schools came to an end last week with some dribbling and smiling.
At QJS, the Grade 8 team faced off against the Grade 9 team for final bragging rights.
In the end it was the Grade 8 team that prevailed, taking the final match up 41-37 in a hotly contested game.
“They had good energy and determination,” coach of the Grade 8 squad Melissa Boles said of her players.
South of town, Lakeview elementary school hosted the Grade 7 girls basketball tournament last Wednesday.
After round robin play, the final match saw the Dragon Lake elementary school Dragons face the Raptors from Red Bluff elementary school.
It was a see-saw battle early on, but eventually the Dragons, who went through the season undefeated, broke the game open with a strong second half, taking the division title with a 32-17 win.
“Our defence wasn’t there today.” coach of the Raptors, Shelley Mack said.
“They played hard, they worked as a team” coach of the Dragons Kulvinder Johal said.
“They stuck together, they’re a great bunch of girls.”
Moneesha Johal, captain of the Dragons, agreed with the coach.
“Our teamwork and passing,” she said were the keys to the Dragon’s successful season.
