Varsity basketball season comes to an end

The basketball varisty teams at Quesnel junior secondary school and local elementary schools came to an end last week with some dribbling and smiling.

At QJS, the Grade 8 team faced off against the Grade 9 team for final bragging rights.

In the end it was the Grade 8 team that prevailed, taking the final match up 41-37 in a hotly contested game.

“They had good energy and determination,” coach of the Grade 8 squad Melissa Boles said of her players.

South of town, Lakeview elementary school hosted the Grade 7 girls basketball tournament last Wednesday.

After round robin play, the final match saw the Dragon Lake elementary school Dragons face the Raptors from Red Bluff elementary school.

It was a see-saw battle early on, but eventually the Dragons, who went through the season undefeated, broke the game open with a strong second half, taking the division title with a 32-17 win.

“Our defence wasn’t there today.” coach of the Raptors, Shelley Mack said.

“They played hard, they worked as a team” coach of the Dragons Kulvinder Johal said.

“They stuck together, they’re a great bunch of girls.”

Moneesha Johal, captain of the Dragons, agreed with the coach.

“Our teamwork and passing,” she said were the keys to the Dragon’s successful season.
