The Quesnel Wildfire bantam lacrosse team continued their winning ways with two wins this weekend as they hosted their counterparts from Fort St. John for a set of exhibition matches.

The Fort St. John players were bigger, but after a tentative first period during Saturday’s match, the Wildfire kicked it into gear for a 9-4 win.

Fort St. John opened the scoring Saturday night, just five minutes into the opening frame, when the Wildfire couldn’t snag a loose ball in the corner, which allowed a Fort St. John player to step to the top of the crease and fire a low shot past Wildfire netminder T.J. Riestad.

Wildfire captain, Levi Robertson, tied it up for the home team with an end to end gem that ended with a shot over the Fort St. John goalies shoulder.

Fort St. John again caught the Wildfire flat-footed to go ahead 2-1. The goal seemed to stoke the Wildfire as they went on to score three unanswered goals before the end of the first period.

The Wildfire dominated the rest of the way.

Levi Robertson led the way with two more goals in the second period and another in the third period. Dylan Cathcart added a couple of markers for the Wildfire as did Ian Jarvis. Dylan Gook chipped in with a single to round out the scoring.

Sunday morning’s rematch at Twin Arenas saw the Wildfire off to another slow start, but they recouped for another strong second period, lighting the lamp five times on their way to an 8-4 win.

Brody Lawlor and Ian Jarvis led all scorers with two goals. Contributing singles were Levi Robertson,  Bryston Waffle, Dylan Cathcart and Brandon Webb.

Saturday, the Wildfire travel to Prince George for the Great White North lacrosse league championships.
