Andy Knott is mighty proud of his Quesnel & District Minor Hockey Association team.

His Peewee house team travelled to Smithers on March 3-4 and took first place in the eight-team tournament.

Coach Knott says the players call themselves the Yellow Jackets and they certainly stung the opposition with three come-from-behind victories.

Their first game was against Burns Lake and the Yellow Jackets found themselves in a 3-1 deficit.

However, they came back and scored seven unanswered goals to claim the 8-3 victory.

Then the Quesnel Peewees rolled over the host team 18-4 with a great display of offensive fire power.

The Yellow Jackets played Fort. St. James next and had to climb back from a 2-0 deficit if they wanted a berth in the championship game.

Knott says the team really worked hard and didn’t get down on themselves and went on to win an exciting, well-played game by 6-5 margin.

In the championship game against Hazleton, the Quesnel players had to show their grit and determination as they fell behind 4-1.

However, the switch turned on again for the Yellow Jackets, who buzzed around the Hazelton net and notched a seven-goal comeback for the second time in the tournament.

Knott says the players came together and really played well, adding he got great help from assistant coaches Chris Jenson, Rob Lettington and Jesse Winthrope.

“I got some great leadership from my captains and alternate captains.

“The kids had fun and they never quit working.”

He said his Yellow Jackets were ecstatic about winning the championship.

“I don’t know if their feet touched the ground for a week.

“We got a lot of good parent support and cheering in the stands… no negative responses, which was nice to hear.”

Noting they have one more game left against a local house team this weekend, Knott says winning the tournament was a nice way to end the season.
