Zone 8 girls softball team finishes fourth at BC Games

Eight Quesnel girls on U16 team held their own in tough tourney

Eight Quesnel girls helped propel the Zone 8 U16 girls softball team to a fourth place finish at the 2018 B.C. Summer Games in Cowichan Valley July 19-22.

Riley Telford, who played short stop and outfield with the squad, says the experience was a lot of fun and challenging, especially considering they were playing against some high-calibre teams.

While the Zone 8 team was made up primarily of players from B and C leagues, some of the other zones had starting line-ups deep with A players.

Despite this, most of the games were very close, with three of the team’s four losses being decided by one run.

They finished the tournament with a record of 2-4, but came within an inning of making it to the finals.

In the semi-final showdown, the Zone 8 team was matched up with the Zone 2 team from Thompson-Okanagan.

“They were a good team that we weren’t expecting to win against,” says Telford.

“But we held our own and it went into extra-innings.

“We ended up losing, but it was a very good game.”

Heads were still held high on the ride home, as the season was an excellent one.

“This was the best ball season I’ve ever had and I don’t expect to top it,” Telford says.

“We’ve got a great group of people. A lot of us are really good friends and we had our heart in it.”
