Quesnel’s Barkerville Brewing Co. collaborating on another Pink Boots brew

Twenty-one people had a hand in brewing the hibiscus dry-hopped lager

Barkerville Brewing Co. is brewing its second Pink Boots collaboration brew, thanks to helping hands from the community and other northern breweries.

Barkerville Brewing hosted its second Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day March 15, and 21 people had a hand in the brewing process.

Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day grew out of Pink Boots Society’s members’ desire to take part in International Women’s Day by raising the profile of women’s roles in the beer industry. Some of the proceeds from sales of the Pink Boots brews goes towards scholarships and programming.

Last year, Barkerville Brewing Co. brewed a Hurdy Gurdy Hibiscus Pink Ale for the Pink Boots Society.

Head brewer Erin Dale chose to brew a pale ale with the addition of hibiscus, which gave the beer a subtle berry-fruit flavour with a hint of tartness and also lent a pink hue. The Hurdy Gurdy Hibiscus Pale Ale included hibiscus petals and a special Pink Boots Hop blend from Yakima Chief Hops with Citra, Simcoe, Mosaic, Loral and Palisade hops.

This year, Quesnel’s all-female brewing company invited other people from other northern breweries, community members, staff from local liquor stores and industry partners like Gambrinus Malting to be part of the collaboration once again.

Like last year’s Pink Boots brew, they chose to add hibiscus to the brew, but this year’s collaboration brew is a Hibiscus Dry Hopped Lager.

They’ve used Loral, Glacier, Mosaic, Simcoe and Sabro hops, which are part of an exclusive Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day hops blend from Yakima Chief Hops. Yakima Chief Hops donates $3 from every pound sold to the Pink Boots Society for education and programming.

The beer will be in draught and packaged. Watch Barkerville Brewing Co.’s website for updates on its release.

The Pink Boots Society is a non-profit international organization that was founded in 2007 by Teri Fahrendorf, a professional brewer for 19 years. The society teaches, supports and encourages women in the brewing industry or wanting to get into the brewing industry , and raises money for educational scholarships.

Dale says she has noticed a huge rise in the number of Pink Boots brews in the three years she has been involved in the Pink Boots Society events.
