The candidates for this year’s Quesnel Ambassador Leadership Program were introduced to Quesnel’s councillors, in keeping with a longstanding tradition.
The program has evolved from its beginnings as the Miss Quesnel pageant. Five years ago that gender-restrictive mandate turned into the fully inclusive leadership opportunity that met the public officially at City Hall at the Feb. 23 meeting of council.
“The Quesnel Ambassador Leadership Program is designed to give the youth in our community the skills and confidence to achieve their goals while representing Quesnel in a positive manner,” said a statement issued by organizers. “The Quesnel Ambassador Program has strong ties to the community and continues to be an iconic program that promotes confident young men and women, various local events, and the City of Quesnel.”
Last year’s two selected ambassadors, Nevaeh Kueber and Jada Crossman, were on hand to introduce this year’s candidates, each sponsored by a local business.
This year’s candidates are:
Avery Cassidy – Wizards Garage
Anna Simpson – O’Flynn Roofing Ltd
Makenzie Konrad – West Quesnel Business Association
Alexi Howe – Hohmann Brothers Logging Ltd
Samuel Agboji – William Lacy Real Estate
Jamie-Lynn Fedoruk – Craig’s Table
The top two will be announced in summer after the candidates participate in a number of growth and leadership scenarios.
The program, supported by the City of Quesnel, “aspires to make a difference in the beautiful City of Quesnel,” said organizers. “Quesnel candidates and ambassadors take part in many local events throughout the year. They also represent our city out of town. Activities include fundraising occasions for charities, as well as public appearances at celebrations and award nights. There are almost always a few royalty or candidates providing a helping hand in the community.”
The primary goal of the program is to build leadership skills, improve public speaking, while becoming more active in Quesnel’s festivals and events. During the six-month program candidates write and perform expressive speeches, learn financial management, and many other growth opportunities.
