Snow sliding fun will be off the list of winter activities at Barkerville Historic Town and Park east of Quesnel.

The Shamrock Tube Run has been dismantled and put into storage, according to an Oct. 31 news release.

The Barkerville Heritage Trust is responsible for managing the historic site’s assets and relies upon provincial funding to provide quality programming.

“For us to continue to be responsible with our spending during a time of increased liability and associated expenses, we will no longer be operating the tube run,” said Kate Cox, CEO of Barkerville Historic Town and Park.

The Shamrock Tube Run opened in 2017, helping attract visitors to the historic site during the off-season and the nearby community of Wells, and is owned by the province.

A decision on the future destination of the tube run is expected to be made by the BC Government in consultation with the Barkerville Heritage Trust.

“We are working towards a solution that will keep the tube run local and we look forward to announcing where it will be going and when it will open,” Cox said.

Despite the conveyor lift access to two tube runs being no longer available, visitors are welcome to participate in self-guided tours at Barkerville Historic Town and Park where the walk-in gate will remain open this winter.

The shops, restaurants, and living history programs are taking their winter break, but it is still a lovely time of year to take in the town’s history, noted the news release adding year-round accommodations for those who enjoy a weekend getaway filled with snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are available.

Barkerville’s heritage workshops will also be available for booking all winter long with lessons in blacksmithing and printing press operation

The Old-Fashioned Victorian Christmas will be taking a break for one more season and making its return in December 2023.
