Firefighters were busy in a number of different ways, in recent days.

The Quesnel Fire Department responded April 7 just after 7 p.m. for a dumpster fire near a small business in the 300-block of Front Street.

Then, on April 8, 10 and 13, firefighters were called to grassfires at Earley Avenue, an undetermined address, and on North Star Road, respectively.

There was also a grass fire incident at the high profile corner of Highway 97 and Highway 26. The Barlow Creek Volunteer Fire Department was called first to this April 10 incident just before 10 a.m., and Quesnel Fire Department was soon called to aid in the firefighting efforts. These fires were threatening a railroad, and this was seen by a passerby who intervened with grassroots firefighting efforts that limited the fire’s advance before the trained departments arrived to take over.

These first responders, most of them volunteers, were also called upon to help with various medical aid and smoke alarm calls as well.

Residents are reminded to not start an outdoor burning project without first contacting the Quesnel Fire Department to ensure it is allowed.

An incident during Quesnel’s morning commute brought Quesnel Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service and the RCMP to the intersection of Dragon Lake Road and Highway 97. A pickup and an SUV were involved in a collision just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday (April 16). “The SUV was attempting to cross Highway 97 from Dragon Lake Road when it was struck by the pickup truck travelling north on the highway,” said Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Clay Kronebusch. “The drivers and sole occupants of both vehicles received minor injuries.” One was taken to hospital for examination. (Karen Powell photo)
